Read MoreThe night after leaving Karpenisi is spent camped next to a river close to the village of Domnista. The wide river bed looks like a construction site, with gravel pushed into banks, partially empty water channels weaving between them like ribbons and tree trunks abandoned like giant matchsticks. There are two bridges across the river: one larger and intact; the original laying in pieces along its side, destroyed in floods a few years ago.
