So, my brother and I didn't have a huge amount planned for New Year 2011/2012 and both fancied a bit of fresh air. I had plans for a couple of days biking at Afan in South Wales, so we made a plan to walk and camp in the Black Mountains over New Years Eve.We parked on the east side of Twmpa (aka Lord Hereford's Knob :-)), having left the other car in a Forestry Commission car park a few valleys over to the west.We walked up and over Twmpa in the hour or two before dark, and camped on the edge of a hanging valley looking out to the North. It was a very windy night! At midnight, we could see lots of little fireworks displays going off in all the little villages down on the plain to the north. The next day we loaded up and walked west, over a few hills and through the hanging valleys of this ridge. We'd planned to be out for two nights but the weather got bad, we'd left some of our food in the car and we were struggling to find anywhere flat to camp the second night that wasn't waterlogged, so we headed back to the car and to the youth hostel in Brecon.A nice way to start the New Year. No hangover, fresh air, exercise, and the first of many nights out in a tent planned for this year. Here are some photos (above) and a video of just how windy it was in the tent...
